Unparalleled Devotion

by Brett Fuller on July 17, 2019

Foxes’ Book of Martyrs tells stories of devotion unparalleled. Faced with imminent torture and death, saints would not deny Christ as their Lord. The early church endured maiming, crucifixion and being fed to wild beasts.

2 Samuel 8:7 describes what may have motivated these brave Christians. It says, “Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away. If one were to give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be utterly scorned.” Love will spend itself so others might benefit. It sacrifices so others might gain. It commits so others can be free. A tsunami of circumstances cannot drown love.

Most of western Christianity does not face the persecution of the first century church. Yet our devotion doesn’t seem to be as true. Rather than sacrificing things we enjoy for Christ, we are all too willing to sacrifice our commitment to Christ for the things we enjoy: a job, finances or a relationship? May this sad reality change as we learn to love Him as He loved us. Live right, live well…
