Two Kinds of Sorrow

by Brett Fuller on November 18, 2019

Remorse reflects internal sorrow. The ability to feel sorrow over an offensive act is a gift from God. Our conscience, prompted by this remorse, helps us exit from wrong doing. Yet, if the reason behind our sorrow does not find its source in the root of the sin, then our sorrow will betray us; for its longing for resolve is too easily satisfied by a removal of the discomfort which spawned it.

Paul describes the two kinds of sorrow in 2 Corinthians 7:10 saying, “For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance leading to salvation without regret, but worldly sorrow produces death.” Godly sorrow mourns for how our actions have injured the Father while seeking reform that prevents a reoccurrence. This in turn allows us to be saved from repeating the error, and that without regret. Worldly sorrow only wants sin’s consequence to depart. Once relieved, the pain is forgotten and the cycle begins again.

Today, let Godly sorrow be that for which you yearn. Live right and live well…
