Salt of the Earth

by Brett Fuller on March 19, 2018

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus says, “You are the salt of the earth. but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.” Salt was used in the ancient world as primarily a preserving agent. When salt was no longer useful for its primary purpose, it was thrown out into the snowy streets of Israel to help folks not to slip and fall.

There are men in the Bible who lost their “saltiness”. Samson cavorted with prostitutes and wound up killing himself to vanquish the Philistines. Solomon practiced the idolatry of his foreign wives resulting in God disciplining him with war and winding up with divided nation. These men’s consequences provide substantial traction for me to not “slip” when walking with my God.

Today, do everything you can to not become “rock salt.” Practice being what you are- a preserving agent to the souls of men- so that when people experience your life they wind up living right and living well…
