Providing the Essentials

by Brett Fuller on February 19, 2018

Our benevolence to those who are in need does more than just stop “want” in its tracks; it captures God’s attention. Prov 19:17 says, “He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and He will reward him for what he has done.”

God is not so deprived as to ever become man’s debtor. Yet when it comes to His disposition to the poor, He postures Himself as one who will repay the benefactor for kindness to the destitute. Considering it is our responsibility to be our brother’s keeper (Gen 4:8-10), it is amazing that God would so obligate Himself.

All of the reasons as to why God uses the lender/borrower simile to convey His sentiments, are not known. Nevertheless, what we can ascertain is this: God is so serious about our duty to provide for the poor that He is willing to subject Himself to the subservient role of the borrower in order to incentivize the prosperous to share. God really does want everyone to live right and live well…
