One In Seven

by Brett Fuller on August 07, 2017

Rest… God thought rest to be so important that He became the occupational archetype for the labor/repose rhythm. Gen 2:3 says, “And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.” He did not rest from weariness. He rested as an example for us to follow.

In Ex 20:9-10 He codified this principle with a commandment saying, "Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work…” One in seven days is to be spent without gainful labor. Resting on a potentially profitable day allows for two things to happen.

  1. A profound trust to be built in God as your provider.
  2. A recalibration of body and soul so the other six days can be lived optimally.

We are finite beings who easily tire and wear down. If the rhythms of these two underlying principles aren’t regularly felt, it becomes very difficult to live right and live well…
