In Genesis 17:5, God changed Abram's name from "Abram" which meant "exalted father" to "Abraham" which meant "father of a multitude." Both spoke of fathering, but the former spoke more of the positional glory of a father, the latter of lasting fruitfulness.
Why the change? The Lord wanted him to identify more with his fruitfulness than his status. He also wanted others to know him more for what he produced than for his place in the family.
