“He Must Increase, I Must Decrease”

by Brett Fuller on January 25, 2021

Proficiency, productivity and the passion for better performance are qualities after which everyone needs to seek. Yet for citizens of the kingdom there is an additional exhortation which needs to be heeded. When John the Baptist was at the height of his ministry, exercising his greatest influence, he coined this remarkable phrase with reference to Christ. In John 3:30, he said "He must increase, but I must decrease."

Wow! Although John undoubtedly prepared himself for success, success was not the goal. The aim of his life was to "set the table" for Jesus. He trained those who would become some of Christ's staff (John 1:32-42). He initiated a revival which Jesus would complete, and he prepared the heart of a nation for the Messiah's ministry.

Every believer is to perform his/her earthly duties with exemplary proficiency, but at our zenith we must also allow His empowering benevolence to overshadow our efforts that He may be glorified. So, whatever you do, become really good at it so you can show the world how good He is! Live right, live well...
