Finding Comfort in the Midst of Pain

by Brett Fuller on January 08, 2018

The occasion to write Ps 61 was the death of David’s son Absalom. David says in verse 1-2, “Hear my cry, O God; Give heed to my prayer.  2 From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”

Though 2 Sam 13 says Absalom was an insurrectionist, a murderer (2Sam 13:28-29) and a traitor, none of his acts would rob him of the treasured status that would come from being David’s boy.

2Sam 18 says, during a battle with David’s men (2Sam 18:5), Absalom is killed in defiance of the king’s order. When David hears of it, he mourns so deeply that it made his men afraid to re-enter Jerusalem for fear of David bringing retribution on those responsible (2Sam 19:1-7). Thus David, being no longer able to mourn in public, takes his heavy heart to God and says, “Hear my cry…”.

When no person can comfort to the depth of our pain, it is good to know that God can touch the deep place of our soul. He is the one who invented comfort. So, talk to Him like you want to. Live right and live well…
