Decreasing the Debt

by Brett Fuller on August 24, 2020

In Luke 16:1-9 Jesus tells the parable of a man who squandered untold wealth. When called to account, he shrewdly went to his master’s debtors and negotiated settlements in favor of the debtors. Jesus said the master praised him because of his ingenuity, for he knew that when he was released from his employ, he would be welcomed into the homes of those whose debt he reduced.

Although the praise for the steward is intended to be read with qualification, this parable does give us a glimpse into how God wants us to interact with people who owe Him.

Reality is, we are the unrighteous steward. We've squandered untold amounts of God's stuff. We should now use the balance of our stewardship privilege to help eliminate other's debt to the Master. In so doing, we make the kind of friends who will welcome us into their newly established outposts of heaven.

So, this week, find someone who has yet to give God His due. Help them erase their certificate of debt by explaining God's plan of forgiveness. Then, watch how as you welcome them into God's house, they will welcome you into theirs. Live right, live well...
