The Old Testament form of worship required that animal and vegetable sacrifices be offered to God. Each gift was to be presented by priests who offered them on the brazen altar. They were either then shared by both priest and/or offerer, or completely consumed as a burnt offering to God.
The altar itself was to be kept stoked by the priests. Lev 6:13 says, “Fire shall be kept burning continually on the altar; it is not to go out.”
